Our Little Blue Dot: Thuringia

Celebrate the Reformation in the Heart of Germany

Nestled in the heart of Germany, nearly halfway between Berlin and Frankfurt and just north of Bavaria, the state of Thuringia is renowned for its outstanding cultural heritage and historical figures. Numerous UNESCO World Heritage sites reveal its storied past, like the ancient Wartburg Castle where composer Wagner found inspiration for his opera “Tannhäuser” and Martin Luther translated the Bible into German.

As 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, LutherCities throughout Thuringia such as Erfurt and Eisenach will host a series of events to honor Luther’s life and legacy.

In 2019, the city of Weimar will also celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus movement, founded by architect Walter Gropius. Other famous names to grace this artistic hub include writers such as Goethe and Schiller, composers Liszt and Bach and painter Lyonel Feininger.

Culinary arts are also a beloved part of the culture, boasting savory delights such as Thuringian Bratwurst and Köstritzer Schwarzbier, produced by one of Germany’s oldest dark-beer breweries and best enjoyed in a charming beer garden. In the picturesque capital city of Erfurt, locals and visitors alike come to the iconic Merchants’ Bridge to sample decadent chocolate truffles.

Don’t miss the gems of Thuringia, where mighty fortresses and historic sites, stunning landscapes and dynamic cities make the past as exciting as the present.
