The Journeyer: Summer 2018

“Can guided outdoor vacations accommodate different activity levels and interests?”

Not only can we arrange a nature-filled guided vacation suited to all levels, but we can mix it up with hiking, biking, kayaking and more. Everyone can tap into their favorite pastimes — and even discover new ones!

We love these vacations because they take into consideration everyone’s skills and abilities, from grandparents to young kids. It’s also a safe way to push beyond your comfort zone under expert guidance. Plus, they layer in plenty of time for relaxation and exploration along with adrenaline-fueled fun.

With Backroads, for example, a multisport vacation on the islands of Maui and Lāna‘i creates the perfect balance of slowing down your pace and experiencing only-in-Hawai‘i thrills. In a single day, you could hike a scenic ridge trail, spot dolphins from a stand-up paddleboard and go snorkeling in a sheltered bay — all before raising a toast to another perfect sunset. Anywhere in the world, you’ll have multiple route options, several skilled leaders and support vans to simplify every step.

Butterfield & Robinson also curates luxury-meets-adventure vacations, anticipating every last detail. Picture spending one day ascending South Africa’s Cape Point, where lunch is served with a view, and another cycling Cape Winelands vineyards — pausing for wine tasting, of course. You never have to worry about transporting your luggage or crossing from one city to the next. Top-tier hotels, custom equipment, and fine dining are all essential parts of this journey.

We also love connecting travelers with cruises that naturally weave in active excursions. Perhaps that means cycling along the Danube thanks to complimentary bicycles on AmaWaterways, doing outdoor yoga near the Columbia River with Uncruise Adventures, or hiking and kayaking in remote Alaskan waters with Lindblad Expeditions.

Hotels & Resorts

Resorts Above the Rest

A whiff of crisp air. An elevated perch among the clouds. A relaxing retreat or energizing day of activity. At these mountain resorts, part of our vast Hotels & Resorts Collection, epic perspectives mark just the beginning of your peak adventure.

Located mid-mountain, The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe reveals some of its prime moments even after ski season has passed. Summer is a pleasure all around, from scaling rocks in Lake Tahoe Basin to jet skiing in the lake. Return in autumn months to uncover some of the region’s best-kept secrets, with gorgeous leaf peeping and harvest-season culinary celebrations. Use your $100 in resort credit at Manzanita restaurant for its library-like wine catalog and a multi-course tasting menu or at the resort’s spa with seasonal treatments like an almond and pumpkin body wrap. Our favorite family activity any time of year: a daily “marshmology” gathering over complimentary s’mores.

In winter months, The Fairmont Chateau Whistler is a ski-in, ski-out destination at the foot of British Columbia’s Blackcomb Mountain. By summertime, the resort shakes off the snow in favor of wildflower-strewn bike paths, flightseeing by floatplane and hikes led by the hotel’s resident Experience Guide. Trade hiking poles for golf clubs and spend a sunny day on the Fairmont’s 18-hole course, carved from the slopes of the Coast Mountain range. For a culinary perspective from great heights, visit the hive of pollinator bees that call the property’s rooftop home and taste their wildflower honey in culinary and cocktail creations served al fresco. Let us reserve you a suite for two or more nights, and we’ll add $100 in resort credit on top of complimentary breakfast and a First Nations-inspired gift.

If you can’t choose between mountain-high vistas or blissful beach vibes, Jade Mountain resort offers the best of both worlds. This St. Lucia property rises above 600 beachfront acres and boasts the magnificent Pitons as its backdrop. Suites and sanctuaries are designed to let nature play a starring role, with infinity pools that seem to meet the Pitons’ foothills and open fourth walls that invite constant views of the Caribbean Sea. Hike from the beach to a yoga deck perched on Jade Mountain’s Celestial Terrace, or clear your mind with an Ayurvedic massage thanks to our gift of $100 in spa credit. For a further sign of nature’s salience, visit La Soufrière volcano and watch the steam rising from its crater.

When it comes to views from above, few are as mythical as Machu Picchu. Belmond Sanctuary Lodge puts the beauty of the Lost City closer than you imagined, a privilege that comes with being Machu Picchu’s only adjacent hotel. Enjoy early morning access to Machu Picchu’s Sun Gate with an informed guide, stroll through the orchid garden and let an Andean shaman guide you through a Pachamama tribute ceremony, asking Mother Earth for health and prosperity. However you choose to surround yourself, nature is always present. Use your $100 in spa credit for a tranquil massage in the garden, presided over by the imposing peak of Huayna Picchu. Lunch at Tampu restaurant — featuring indigenous produce grown in the lodge’s own land — peers into a lush forest through floor-to-ceiling windows.

The Cederberg Mountains at Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat are more than just a staggering setting for this five-star Relais & Châteaux lodge; they’re also a testament to mankind’s ancient tribes. Stone Age Bushmen called these massifs home and left their mark in oxide pigments on the stone; the resulting collection of rock art sites is an essential reminder of South Africa’s heritage, and Bushmans Kloof is the custodian. Encounter 10,000-year-old cave paintings and decorated shelters on a hike as the sun emerges over the Western Cape, or take a mountain bike on fynbos-fringed trails. By night, head out for a sundowner or starlit safari, then return to The Homestead for all-inclusive dining or let us arrange a special private dining experience, on us!

From mountaintop escapes to beach breaks, our Hotels & Resorts Collection includes more than 1,000 of the world’s finest hotels, resorts, lodges, spas and unique places to stay. Benefit from our exclusive privileges such as daily breakfast for two and a special amenity that varies by property, as well as upgrades, early check-in and late check-out when available. 2019 is the 75th Anniversary of D-Day.

On June 6, 1944, in the early morning hours, more than 156,000 Allied soldiers stormed the usually tranquil and serene beaches off the coast of Normandy. The unforgettable beaches of Normandy where Allied forces landed during WWII’s D-Day invasion is one of many places you’ll experience on the Paris & Normandy river cruise onboard AmaLyra. A trip back to these beaches is both evocative and sobering. The French in the Normandy countryside remain particularly thankful and friendly to Americans, British and Canadians, et al for their sacrifice on foreign soil. Museums are dotted throughout the beaches and include equipment and other artifacts used in the landing.

Mama Mia

Beginning in May 2019, Star Clippers will pay homage to the beloved romantic comedy Mamma Mia with their new 7-night Mamma Mia Cruise through the Greek isles. This seven-night itinerary, sailing roundtrip out of Athens, will visit several of the islands where Mamma Mia — as well as the highly anticipated Mamma Mia 2 — were filmed. Guests will visit the island of Skopelos, home to the most iconic Mamma Mia location — the tiny chapel of Agios Ioannis sto Kastri, where Sophie was married. This special itinerary will also call on the island of Skiathos, where the charming Old Port was the setting for the scene where the three fathers meet for the first time, and the area around the St. Nikolaos Bell Tower was the spot where Sophie mailed her letters. Star Clippers will offer four departures of the Mamma Mia Highlights itinerary in 2019.

Land Vacations

Once every 10 years, the tiny Bavarian village of Oberammergau is home to a beloved recreation of the Passion Play. The plague of 1632 almost wiped out the entire village, but they were saved and in honor of this, the surviving inhabitants pledged that they would stage a play about Christ’s Passion evermore. About 2,000 people take place in the 6-hour play, in which the villagers transform themselves from Bavarians into Jews and Romans from the time of Christ. An estimated 100 performances are staged between mid-May and mid-October. The performances are in German, but books of translations into other languages are available for the audience to follow along.

Explore Europe and enjoy premium tickets with Trafalgar. With Insight Vacations, see London, Paris, and Lucerne before attending the Passion Play, followed by VIP access through Italy. Globus, with its portfolio of religious vacations, has Oberammergau travel for both groups and individuals.

Greece is one the most popular vacation destinations in the world, and for good reason: the landscape offers a picturesque variety and its cuisine will reward even the most demanding visitors. It is also a country with a great and ancient history; one that gave birth to the Olympic Games, the concepts of democracy and philosophy, and ancient Greek drama.

South Africa

South Africa is an incredible destination in so many ways – it is the kind of destination that will touch all of your senses in a myriad of ways, and once all is said and done you probably won’t be the same again. The incredible diversity is a key attraction – from the deserts of the Kgalagadi to the lush green forests of Tsitsikamma to the unspoiled beaches of the Wild Coast to the vibrant nightlife of Cape Town.

South Africa is mercurial in nature, one moment you’ll be exploring the origins of ancient man, the next you’re cage-diving with Great White Sharks and the next you’re drinking traditional beer in a lively township shebeen.

As a people, they are known for their humanity – they may have come from a past filled with separation and struggle but their future is one of unity and possibility. In true African spirit, they understand the value of a warm South African welcome, and they can’t wait to welcome you to their Rainbow Nation – in 11 official languages.

There are nine spectacular provinces for you to explore – nine incredible diverse parts of the country that will open up your sense of possibility in ways you never thought possible. Oh, and by the way – they do have a sensational climate (with over 300 days of sunshine per year in some parts). They are also extremely proud of their superb infrastructure – excellent roads, a great variety of accommodation options and world-class service.

South Africa truly is a ground-breaking destination for explorers and adventurers who want to experience life in all its fullness. They are a destination that allows you to scratch below the surface and experience endless possibilities, and to walk away the richer for having been there.
