Each Thursday, Anywhere Anytime Journeys will bring you some fun trivia about travel and tourism. This week, our topic is Matmata.
Matmata is a region in Tunisia noted for its so-called invisible villages. Residences are hard to spot because they are cave dwellings that are open at the top and look like craters. The hollowed-out craters are surrounded at their below-ground patio levels by living spaces and storage rooms which residences have carved into the earth for their comfort away from the heat. The craters in this arid setting create a lunar landscape that producers Steven Spielberg used to good effect. Parts of “Star Wars” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark” were shot on this turf.
